NYC Good News
Kittens are widely considered some of the most charming animals on earth. These tiny, velvety, and energetic creatures have a unique way of brightening our day. Whether you are already a cat enthusiast or simply curious about nature, kittens possess many remarkable qualities. Understanding their development and behaviors makes these young felines even more impressive.
How Kittens Grow and Develop
When kittens are first born, their eyes remain tightly shut. They are completely unable to see for the first week of life because their eyelids require more time to develop. Interestingly, every kitten is born with blue eyes, though this shade shifts to a different color as they mature. While their eye color changes, the actual size of their eyes stays the same from birth through adulthood, which explains why they appear so large on their tiny faces.
A kitten's cognitive development is also rapid. At birth, their brain is roughly the size of a human pinky finger, but it eventually expands to the size of a large walnut. Their physical abilities are equally staggering; a kitten can leap up to seven times its own height. Their dental health also undergoes a major transition; they begin with 26 baby teeth, which fall out around six months of age to make room for 30 larger, permanent adult teeth.
Sensory Skills and Physical Traits
Kittens are equipped with incredible sensory tools. Most young cats have about 24 whiskers, which act as highly sensitive radar for detecting air movement and nearby objects. Their hearing is particularly sharp, aided by 32 individual muscles in each ear that allow them to rotate their ears 180 degrees to pinpoint sounds. Their sense of smell is also powerful, reaching levels up to 14 times stronger than that of a human.
Internally, a kitten’s body works much faster than ours. Their heart beats at approximately 240 beats per minute, which is twice the speed of a human heart. When it comes to movement, cats are impressively agile, capable of reaching speeds up to 30 miles per hour. They also possess a special layer of cells called the tapetum lucidum, which reflects light and grants them superior vision in dark environments.
Social Behavior and Daily Life
Playing is more than just fun for kittens; it is a vital part of their day, occupying nearly 30% of their waking hours. They especially enjoy climbing and hide-and-seek in cardboard boxes. Kittens also learn essential survival skills, such as using a litter box, by mimicking their mother’s actions. When a kitten feels content and safe, they often display affection by rubbing their cheeks against their favorite people or objects.
While most kittens are born in litters of three to five, a group of these young cats is officially known as a "clowder." They typically nurse for the first month or so before transitioning to solid food. Most young cats stay with their mothers until they are around eight or nine months old, at which point they might join a human family or live independently.
History and Modern Cat Facts
The domestic cats we know today are descendants of wildcats from Africa. Humans first began living with cats in Egypt roughly 4,000 years ago, and ancient artwork from that era frequently depicts them. Today, cats are among the most popular companions globally, with tens of millions living in households across the United States alone.
Different breeds offer unique characteristics, such as the Maine Coon, which is the largest domestic breed and can grow to nearly four feet in length. Most house cats live between 13 and 17 years. One thing that remains consistent across almost all breeds, however, is a dislike for water. Because their fur does not provide good insulation when wet, most kittens prefer to stay dry and use their remarkably clean tongues to groom themselves instead.

Finding Out the Global Population of White Rhinos
On July 22, 2025, the world said goodbye to Ozzy, a legendary American rock star. Coincidentally, on the very same day, a new white rhino entered the world—also named Ozzy! The Safari West wildlife preserve, located in Santa Rosa, California, gave the newborn calf this name to honor the recently deceased singer, whose passing had been announced just a few hours before the rhino’s birth. The calf’s mother, Eesha, a 20-year-old southern white rhino, and father, Ongava, are reported to be forming a strong bond with their new baby. Staff at the wildlife preserve explain that the name not only pays tribute to Ozzy Osbourne but also symbolizes the endless cycle of life.
