The Best Convertible SUVs
A convertible SUV blends the enjoyment of open-air driving with the practicality and stance of a sport utility vehicle. These vehicles generally fall into two main groups: rugged, off-road-focused models with removable roof sections such as the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco, and more road-oriented crossover-style SUVs with folding soft tops like the now-discontinued Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet.

NYC Good News
A convertible SUV blends the enjoyment of open-air driving with the practicality and stance of a sport utility vehicle. These vehicles generally fall into two main groups: rugged, off-road-focused models with removable roof sections such as the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco, and more road-oriented crossover-style SUVs with folding soft tops like the now-discontinued Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet.
At present, only a few convertible SUVs are available in the U.S. market, although several others have existed over the years from brands including Chevrolet, Land Rover, Range Rover, and Toyota. This overview covers the current options, upcoming models, and notable examples from the past.
Current convertible SUVs available today
Jeep Wrangler
The Jeep Wrangler has long been associated with open-air adventure, evolving from a basic military-inspired utility vehicle into a modern off-road icon with advanced features. It is offered in both two-door and four-door configurations, and also has the Gladiator pickup derived from its platform. Across all versions and trims, one feature remains consistent: the roof is removable.
Unlike typical convertibles that use a retractable roof mechanism, the Wrangler retains a structural frame above the cabin, including visible pillars and cross supports. This design strengthens the vehicle for demanding off-road use. Entry models often come with a foldable vinyl top, while higher trims include removable hard roofs, and buyers can sometimes select both options. Doors can also be removed, enhancing its open-air character and beach-ready appeal.
Ford Bronco
The Ford Bronco follows a similar philosophy to the Wrangler and directly competes with it in the off-road segment. Depending on configuration, it offers either a soft top or removable hard roof panels. When opened up, the Bronco exposes its reinforced frame with upright pillars and crossbars, designed for rugged terrain performance. Like its rival, it also allows door removal, and Ford even offers storage bags for the doors that can be placed in the rear cargo area.
Both the Bronco and Wrangler prioritize durability and off-road capability over cabin refinement. As a result, wind and road noise can be noticeable, especially with soft-top setups. These vehicles trade quiet comfort for versatility and outdoor freedom.
Honorable mention: GMC Hummer EV SUV
The GMC Hummer EV SUV is not a traditional convertible, but it includes removable Transparent Sky Panels that create an open-air effect. These four roof panels can be taken off and stored in the front trunk. When removed and combined with lowered windows, passengers enjoy a wide, unobstructed view of the sky above the cabin.
Although it still has a fixed rear roof section, limiting its full convertible classification, the design delivers a unique semi-open experience that sets it apart in the electric SUV space.
Convertible SUVs arriving in the near future
Upcoming: Jeep Recon
The Jeep Recon is expected to enter production in 2026 with a starting price around $66,995. While not a traditional convertible, it offers significant open-air flexibility. Its doors, rear quarter glass, and tailgate glass can all be removed, and it also features a Sky One-Touch power roof system.
Built with off-road capability in mind, the Recon is also expected to be highly powerful, with an estimated output of around 650 horsepower and 620 lb-ft of torque from its electric drivetrain, promising strong acceleration alongside trail performance.
Upcoming: Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cabriolet
Mercedes-Benz has confirmed plans for a G-Class Cabriolet set to arrive in the U.S. market. Although the G-Class has appeared in convertible forms in other regions, this will mark the first time a cabriolet version is officially offered in the American lineup.
Early teaser images suggest a four-door layout with a soft top that retracts toward the rear of the vehicle. However, final design details have not yet been fully revealed, so its exact configuration remains unconfirmed.
Used convertible SUVs
Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible
The Range Rover Evoque Convertible represents a rare example of a luxury SUV with a fully retractable roof. Produced between 2017 and 2019, it was based on the first-generation Evoque, which itself ran from 2012 through 2019 in standard form.
Unlike the Wrangler or Bronco, the Evoque uses a true power-folding fabric roof. When lowered, only the windshield and A-pillars remain above the cabin, providing a fully open side and rear view for occupants. However, it does not include a dedicated cover for the folded roof, leaving part of the mechanism exposed in its storage position.
Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet
Produced from 2011 to 2014, the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet was an unconventional attempt to combine SUV practicality with convertible styling. It required a two-door body design and featured a distinctive split rear window, which was intended to improve rear visibility but also created an unusual sky-facing angle.
The model was offered in a single, fully equipped trim level. One notable feature was an integrated cover that concealed the folded soft top, giving it a cleaner appearance when retracted. Optional navigation systems also included Bluetooth audio streaming, helping modernize its otherwise dated technology.
Notable convertible SUVs from earlier years
In previous decades, the U.S. market offered a wider variety of open-top SUVs. Models like the Chevrolet Blazer and GMC Jimmy competed directly with early Ford Bronco generations, while the International Harvester Scout also contributed to the segment’s popularity. Dodge once sold the Ramcharger, and the Volkswagen Thing, with its Beetle-based engineering, is often considered part of this category as well.
Smaller compact SUVs such as the Geo Tracker, Kia Sportage, Suzuki Samurai, Land Rover Freelander, and Toyota RAV4 were also available in convertible or soft-top variants at different points in time. Additionally, vehicles like the Daihatsu Rocky and Isuzu Amigo combined open-air designs with legitimate off-road ability.
Even iconic models such as the Land Rover Defender and Toyota Land Cruiser have, at various points in their histories, been offered in convertible configurations, highlighting how popular the concept once was across multiple segments.
