NYC Good News

The Moss-backed Tanager is a classic member of the chunky-bodied Bangsia tanager group. It has a relatively large head covered in violet-blue feathers, which creates a strong contrast with its mostly muted green body. A bright yellow patch in the center of the upper breast adds another distinctive feature to its appearance.

This species is a social bird that often lives in groups. It can be seen both with other Moss-backed Tanagers and as part of mixed-species flocks with different birds. One of its more unusual habits is perching high on exposed branches, either in open areas within the forest or above the forest canopy, where it becomes easier to spot.

The Moss-backed Tanager is found from west-central Colombia to northwestern Ecuador. It inhabits humid, moss-covered cloud forests and can occur at elevations reaching approximately 2,100 meters above sea level.

Scientific Name and History

The scientific name of the Moss-backed Tanager reflects the contributions of early bird researchers. The genus Bangsia was named in honor of Outram Bangs, an American zoologist and bird collector. The species name edwardsi recognizes Henri Milne Edwards, a French zoologist.

Over time, this bird has been given several regional names. In different areas it is known as Bangsia Cariazul, Bangsia Dorsimusgosa, and Tangara de Edwards. In German, it is referred to as Edwardstangare. These names reflect the bird’s recognition among different cultures and scientific communities.

Understanding the Fundamentals of Caloric Equilibrium

Understanding the Fundamentals of Caloric Equilibrium

The concept of caloric balance centers around the comparison of calorie intake with calorie expenditure. It plays a pivotal role in your overall health and physical fitness, as it dictates whether you maintain, gain, or lose weight over time. Remarkably, caloric balance isn't concerned with the origin of calories, whether they stem from proteins, carbohydrates, or fats; it's solely about the grand total of calories ingested versus calories expended.
