All about the Bluethroat

The Bluethroat is a visually impressive bird species, best recognized for the vivid blue patch covering the throat area. This colorful bib is bordered by two bands, one reddish-brown and the other dark black. Like many bird species, male Bluethroats have more colorful and elaborate markings compared with females, which lack the distinctive blue throat patch. Both sexes have grayish upperparts and pale underparts. Another shared feature is their habit of spreading their tails, revealing a chestnut-colored marking close to the tail tip.

When observed carefully, small differences can be found between the various subspecies of the Bluethroat, scientifically known as Luscinia svecica. The most noticeable variation is the color of the throat spot. Some individuals have a red central patch, while others display a white one. These differences give rise to the names Red-spotted Bluethroat and White-spotted Bluethroat.

In terms of size, Bluethroats are comparable to European Robins, reaching around 13–14 cm in length. However, they have developed longer and more slender legs compared with Erithacus rubecula. They are also highly territorial birds, defending their areas with strong and distinctive songs, sometimes even performing these displays while flying.

Passage Migration

In the United Kingdom, Bluethroats are not permanent residents and do not remain during the winter. Instead, they appear only as passage migrants, with an estimated 85–600 visiting pairs recorded. The best opportunities to see them are during migration periods, which usually occur from May to early June and again from August to October.

During migration, Bluethroats are mainly found in coastal regions of the UK, ranging from Lothian in Scotland to Kent and westward toward Cornwall. They prefer locations with dense vegetation mixed with areas of open ground. When spotted in open spaces, they can often be seen moving quickly across the ground, hopping and disappearing among bushes, displaying their naturally cautious behavior.

The Bluethroat is currently listed as a species of Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

During the breeding season, Bluethroats usually raise one or two broods each year. Each clutch contains around 5–7 eggs, and after hatching, the young birds require approximately 15 days before they are capable of leaving the nest. Their nests are constructed from materials such as moss, small twigs, and grass, with the inside lined using animal hair and soft plant fibers.

The worldwide Bluethroat population varies considerably depending on estimates but is believed to include roughly 545,126–1,376,505 breeding pairs. This global population is much larger compared with the relatively small number of birds that pass through the UK during migration.

Bluethroats belong to the chat group of insect-eating birds and are classified within the Old World flycatcher family. Their diet mainly consists of insects, but they may also feed on berries and caterpillars. Although uncommon, it is possible for one to occasionally appear in a garden.

Differences Between the Two Main Bluethroat Subspecies Found in the UK

Two main Bluethroat subspecies are known to visit the UK during migration. The less frequently observed variety is the White-spotted Bluethroat, while the more commonly recorded type is the Red-spotted Bluethroat.

The easiest way to tell these two forms apart is by examining the color of the throat marking. The Red-spotted Bluethroat has a reddish or chestnut-colored spot in the center of its blue throat patch, whereas the White-spotted Bluethroat displays a pale white marking instead. These distinctive throat colors are the reason behind their different names.
