NYC Good News
Road trips have always been a popular way to enjoy a relaxing and affordable getaway, whether traveling alone or with a group. There is a special feeling that comes with driving along open roads, creating memories, and experiencing the freedom and adventure that only a road journey can provide.
Choosing the right vehicle can make the entire trip even better. Comfort, passenger space, and practicality are essential when spending long hours on the road. Few vehicles combine these qualities with timeless style quite like classic station wagons. These vintage cars provide plenty of room for passengers and luggage while offering a unique appearance that continues to attract car enthusiasts.
Here are some classic station wagons that deserve consideration for your next road adventure.
Chrysler Town & Country
The Chrysler Town & Country is one of the most recognizable classic “woodie” station wagons, produced from 1941 to 1988. It became famous for being among the first station wagons to feature genuine wooden doors and exterior side panels.
When it was first introduced, Chrysler used real mahogany wood throughout the design. However, by the 1970s, the company transitioned to simulated woodgrain panels to maintain the classic appearance while reducing production costs.
The original 1941 version was powered by Chrysler’s I6 or I8 engines and offered seating for up to nine passengers, making it an excellent family vehicle. By the final production years in 1988, the large full-size wagon had evolved into a smaller mid-size K-body model designed to comfortably carry five passengers.
Ford Country Squire
Ford manufactured the Country Squire from 1950 through 1991, making it one of the longest-running and most beloved station wagons in American automotive history.
Like the Chrysler Town & Country, the Ford Country Squire became famous for its woodgrain exterior styling, which gave the vehicle a warm, classic appearance while maintaining a sense of luxury.
Throughout its four decades of production, Ford released many different versions of the Country Squire. One of the most memorable examples was the 1966 model, which offered an optional third-row seat to increase passenger capacity.
The 1966 Ford Country Squire was also available with several V8 engine choices, producing between 200 and 345 horsepower depending on the configuration. This combination of space, power, and style made it a favorite among families and collectors.
Buick Estate Wagon
General Motors produced the Buick Estate Wagon for nearly half a century, from 1941 until 1990. Over its long production history, the model went through many transformations and design changes.
One of the most iconic versions was the 1949 Buick Estate Wagon, which was available in Roadmaster, Super, and Special editions. These early models helped establish Buick’s reputation for combining luxury with practical wagon design.
The third-generation Buick Estate Wagon, produced between 1977 and 1990, became one of the most widely recognized versions. It was also sold under names such as Electra Estate and LeSabre Estate.
This generation featured a 4-speed automatic transmission and offered several engine options, including the Buick V8 350-cubic-inch (5.7-liter) engine, the Oldsmobile V8 307-cubic-inch (5.0-liter) engine, and the LF9 diesel V8 350-cubic-inch (5.7-liter) engine.
Pontiac Safari
The Pontiac Safari was produced from 1955 to 1989 and became known for its combination of attractive styling, practicality, and dependable performance.
Throughout its nearly 30-year production run, the Safari appeared in many different forms, but one of the most notable versions was the Pontiac Grand Safari, produced between 1971 and 1978.
The Grand Safari represented the largest station wagon Pontiac ever built. It featured a 127-inch wheelbase and an impressive overall length of 231.3 inches.
These vehicles were built with durability in mind and had a substantial presence on the road. With a weight exceeding 5,000 pounds, the Pontiac Grand Safari offered a strong, spacious, and comfortable driving experience.
