NYC Good News
In southern Sweden, winter can feel long, freezing, and exceptionally dark, encouraging people to spend much of their time indoors. Evenings are often enjoyed at home by the warm glow of candles, with plenty of hearty comfort food to make the cold season more inviting.
Farther north, winter takes on a completely different character. The landscape is covered in brilliant white snow, creating bright days despite the short hours of daylight. Children make the most of the conditions by playing outside, constructing snowmen, going sledding, and even building snow domes.
On weekends, many people head into the snowy wilderness for outdoor adventures. Depending on the conditions, they may travel by cross-country skis, ice skates, snowmobiles, or snowshoes. After spending time outside in the cold, there is little better than returning home with rosy cheeks and warming up with a steaming mug of hot chocolate topped with rum and whipped cream.
A Cabin in the Swedish Wilderness
About 500 kilometers north of Stockholm, Ann Rullander has created her own peaceful winter retreat: a charming log cabin sitting beside a huge frozen lake.
The house dates from the 1800s and underwent a complete renovation in 2006. Before Ann and her husband made it their permanent home five years ago, the property had primarily served as a summer cottage.
Today, the cabin's simple white-painted wooden interior beautifully reflects the snowy landscape outside. Inside, a roaring fire, flickering candles, and piles of cozy blankets create a warm and welcoming contrast to the freezing world beyond the windows.
It is easy to imagine settling into this peaceful home and watching the snow-covered landscape stretch out around the cabin.
Keeping the Snow at Bay
The amount of snow surrounding the property is truly remarkable. Keeping the porch and pathways clear must be quite a demanding task, especially when so much snow accumulates.
Yet clearing the snow is not simply a chore in this part of Sweden. It is an essential part of winter life, particularly if you want to keep the house accessible and be able to get out when the landscape is buried beneath snow.
Life Beside the Frozen Lake
The frozen lake may look completely different during the warmer months. In summer, Ann and her family enjoy swimming in the water and using a boat to explore the lake and surrounding area.
For now, however, summer activities have been put on hold. Until the snow and ice disappear, skis and a snowmobile are the more practical ways to get around.
This remarkable Swedish cabin captures the magic of northern winter life: a vast snowy landscape outside, a warm and comfortable interior inside, and countless opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.
