Not long ago, I told a friend that the birth of each of my four children ranked among the happiest days of my life. In those moments, I felt a pure and indescribable joy. And every time I held one of those newborn babies, I can still recall the sense of awe—and the sobering weight—of the responsibility that lay ahead.

While I was focused then on my duty to protect and provide for each new little life, I didn’t yet realize the many other roles I would need to fill as a father. When a man becomes a dad, his responsibilities expand. He’s no longer accountable only for himself and the mother of his children—he’s also entrusted with the profound task of nurturing another human being. That means learning to take on multiple roles, and to carry them out well. Here are five vital but often underestimated roles of a father.

1. The Motivator

As a father, you’ll often serve as a helper, coach, and friend. One of your responsibilities is to inspire your children toward daily accomplishment and healthy development. I’ve noticed my own kids aren’t always internally driven to grow in character, discipline, or purpose. So when I recognize their potential, I step in—sometimes with creativity, other times with firmness—to encourage their progress. This might involve offering ideas, setting up rewards, creating structure, or simply communicating clear expectations.

2. The Enforcer

Father absence is a serious issue in today’s society, and one of the greatest challenges children in such homes face is the lack of a consistent male presence and leadership. A key part of having a father in the home is having someone who upholds rules and sets boundaries. Whether we like it or not, children often respond differently to a father’s authority, especially within the family. When a dad takes the lead in reinforcing household standards, it also lightens a mother’s load considerably.

3. The Encourager

Children are born longing for their father’s approval and attention. One of the most powerful ways to build them up is to become their greatest supporter and most loyal fan. Offering regular praise and positive feedback in areas where they excel can have a lasting impact. I’ve personally watched my children’s expressions change when I say things like, “You’re doing such a good job,” or, “I’m so thankful you’re my child.” Every kid thrives on genuine, uplifting encouragement from their dad.

4. The Mentor

There are essential lessons and practical skills your child will likely never learn unless you teach them. Part of being a father is preparing your children to thrive in life. From learning to ride a bike to building healthy relationships with others—and so much in between—your child benefits greatly from your intentional guidance. Yes, it requires time and occasional inconvenience, but the long-term rewards are priceless.

5. The Counselor

Children face struggles, too. As adults, it’s easy to overlook this because their worries can seem small. But do you remember how big little things felt when you were young? Kids don’t instinctively know how to handle the challenges life brings their way. After all, they’re still growing—they’re adults in the making. They regularly need guidance, insight, and wisdom. Fathers should aim to be their children’s primary counselor—the trusted source they turn to for advice. Because they’ll seek it somewhere, and there’s no one better equipped than you.
