NYC Good News

Between Croatia’s scenic Adriatic coastline and the bustling capital of Zagreb lies one of Europe’s most extraordinary natural treasures — Plitvice Lakes National Park. Although it is famous among European travelers, many visitors from the United States have yet to discover this breathtaking landscape.

Deep in Croatia’s mountainous interior, close to the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, lies a remarkable hiking destination unlike anywhere else in Europe. The park is home to 16 cascading lakes connected by countless waterfalls, surrounded by dense forests and wooden pathways that allow visitors to explore the scenery from close range. Its untouched beauty proves that Europe still holds many spectacular places beyond its most well-known landmarks.

Entering a World of Lakes and Waterfalls

During my first visit, I started from a scenic viewpoint that offered a sweeping view of the entire valley. Below me stretched a landscape that looked like a European version of Niagara Falls scattered across a forest-covered canyon.

Following a winding downhill trail, I quickly left behind roads, vehicles, and modern structures. In their place appeared a peaceful natural paradise filled with crystal-clear lakes, flowing waterfalls, and towering trees. Local Croatian families enjoyed the scenery around me, creating a warm and lively atmosphere.

The famous wooden boardwalks of the park lead visitors directly across the lakes, offering an unforgettable view of the rushing streams and small waterfalls. Along the route, I passed Šupljara Cave, a location used in the filming of a German western-style movie during the 1960s that remains popular with German visitors today.

A Landscape Shaped by Nature and History

As I continued along the trails toward more waterfalls and scenic viewpoints, I noticed the contrast between Plitvice’s peaceful beauty and its difficult past. In 1991, during Croatia’s struggle for independence from Yugoslavia, the first armed conflict took place in this very area. The park and nearby regions were controlled by Yugoslav forces until 1995, forcing many Croatian residents to leave their homes and live as refugees along the coast.

Today, however, signs of the conflict have disappeared. The park has returned to being one of Croatia’s most beloved attractions, welcoming thousands of visitors each day. Travelers from Croatia, other parts of Europe, and a growing number of international tourists come here to experience its remarkable natural scenery.

Exploring the Lakes by Boat and Trail

Quiet electric boats transport visitors across the park’s largest lake, providing a relaxing way to continue the journey. While waiting for the boat, visitors can meet local vendors selling homemade specialties such as fresh cheese and traditional strudel.

Watching these hardworking locals enjoying a peaceful life in such a beautiful environment creates a sense of appreciation for the stability and prosperity that returned to the region.

On the opposite side of the lake, more wooden pathways lead deeper into the park’s most impressive areas. Here, visitors encounter tranquil streams, colorful forests, playful waterfalls, and clear waters filled with trout. The mist rising from the cascades creates tiny rainbows throughout the landscape as the paths curve around the flowing water.

The fish in the lakes seem almost untouched by human activity. Since fishing is prohibited, the trout grow large and move freely among the visitors. The park is also home to a wide variety of wildlife, including deer, wolves, wildcats, lynx, wild boars, otters, and more than 160 species of birds. European brown bears also live in the region, although they usually remain hidden away from hiking routes.

A Geological Wonder Created Over Time

Plitvice Lakes is not only beautiful but also scientifically fascinating. The park’s unique landscape was formed through a rare geological process. Minerals in the water gradually create natural limestone barriers, forming new dams while water continues to slowly reshape the landscape.

These constantly changing formations of lakes, waterfalls, and limestone terraces create an environment that is extremely rare and difficult to find anywhere else in the world.

Planning Your Visit to Plitvice Lakes

Because of the park’s popularity, visitor numbers are controlled each day, and tickets are often included in Croatia’s major travel routes. Booking ahead is recommended, especially during the busiest seasons.

The park can be reached by bus, with direct services from Zagreb taking around two and a half hours, although traveling by car offers more flexibility. Thanks to the well-designed trails and transportation system, most visitors can experience the highlights within a few hours.

For the best experience, consider arriving in the evening, staying overnight nearby, and beginning your hike early the next morning before the crowds arrive. While the park’s hotels provide convenient accommodation, many travelers prefer staying in local guesthouses known as “sobe,” which offer a more personal and affordable experience.

Ending the Journey with Local Flavors

After exploring the wooden walkways and waterfalls, visitors can relax at one of the park’s traditional restaurants. With rustic wooden interiors and open-fire cooking, these restaurants provide a perfect place to enjoy a meal after a day outdoors.

A plate of locally prepared trout, combined with a review of the day’s photographs, offers a memorable ending to the journey. Plitvice Lakes is a reminder that Europe still contains hidden natural wonders capable of surprising even experienced travelers.

Hydrangea: The Beauty of Repeat Flowering Plants

Hydrangea: The Beauty of Repeat Flowering Plants

Recent advances in hydrangea breeding have created an impressive range of repeat-blooming varieties. Traditional hydrangeas generally form their flower buds on growth produced during the previous year, while many newer cultivars can develop buds on both old wood and new wood. In Portland, this can result in a long flowering season that begins in June and continues until the first frost.
